Gesso

Yesterday I set up a working space to create. It is tight but will work for a bit. I was also able to gesso 5 large canvases and began working on a 30 x 20 for a friend. Bright colors to fill in the gray days.

Thoughtful Sadness

"There is melancholy in the wind and sadness in the grass" Charles Kuralt

I am envisioning sublime coastal landscapes....

My studio is not set up yet and I am already missing my Santa Fe studio - no matter how humble.

Oregon - really!

We have moved! My husband has taken a position in beautiful Corvallis, Oregon. I am blown away with the incredible and diverse landscape. From the tonal coast to the lush farm land. I love the pastoral country here. And the grasses. The Utah painter, Gary Ernest Smith comes to mind every time I see a foreground of grasses with a pasture peeking through. Lots of inspiration.

Mystic Region

"Mystic Region" 8 x 8 oil on canvas

My sister-in-law's home is right next to the Taos Pueblo property in Arroyo Seco, NM. The pueblo's bison are often gathered next to the road. I am drawn to their strong abstract forms against the landscape.

Little Barn

"Little Barn" oil on panel 10 x 8

My grandfather had a cattle ranch in Montana. I don't think he ever painted his barn red. But when I see barns I think of what his days must have been like on that lonely southeastern ranch.

Forever

"Forever" 10 x 8 oil on panel

There are layers and layers of paint on this small painting. Maybe a metaphor for "forever". The richness of life is the overlapping and covering and scrapping and revealing. Then it all comes together somehow with grace and beauty.

Made For You

"Made For You" 8 x 10 oil on board.

I lived in Arroyo Hondo, NM - near Taos - and there is a mysterious and poetic barn there, I called it the Magician's Barn. It is one of the images that inspires and stays with me.

"Needs Mending" 12" x 12"

"Needs Mending" 12 x 12

It appears I would rather paint than post on the blog! Here is another small painting with warm and earthy colors. It reminds me of my grandfather Kent's ranch in Montana. As my grandmother would say...."there isn't much on top of the land....". But there is a familiar beauty in the simple. Enjoy.

"Song of the Red Trees" 12 x 9

"Song of the Red Trees", 12 x 9 SOLD!
As my day passes certain images stay with me- it is not always the grand Santa Fe sunsets or the incredible clouds formations but the small emotive moments that call me to paint.

In The Sunshine

"In the Sunshine" 8 x 10.

We recently traveled to Colorado to a cabin in the historical railroad town of Como. The cabin was my grandparents. Between the nostalgia and the amazing landscape I gathered plenty of inspiration. The single blossoming tree continues to be an important theme.

Please visit http://www.haleart.com/ and http://www.haleart.blogspot.com/ for more paintings.

Painting in Santa Fe

I have been accepted as one of a few painters in a mostly sculpture gallery in Santa Fe, NM on the historical art street of Canyon Road. If you are in Santa Fe please stop by SCULPTURE 619 on Canyon Road. The building is a beautiful little adobe that captures the charm of Santa Fe. I am also painting on site every Saturday.

There are places that stay with us - in memories and dreams. I was fly fishing along a stream in the Sierra Mountains when the world slowed down. This painting is from that memory. Enjoy.

A painting a day - April 17, 2008. The trees are blooming in Santa Fe and it reminds me of the apple orchard my family had near Georgia O'Keeffe's home in Northern New Mexico. This ochard has been very meaningful to me. I try to convey the spirit of the this amazing land.
